Discussion:
Do I need a Fender-brand footswitch for a Fender amp?

I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp, with no footswitch. I'm seeing amp
footswitches on Ebay for 10 bucks, but actual Fender brand switches are
like 30 or more. Will any footswitch work with any amp? The ones I was
looking at were "Johnston" brand, single button switches. (I don't care
about triggering reverb, I just want to overdrive.)

Any help much appreciated.

Does the correct Fender footswitch have an LED on it? What function is
the footswitch for?

Another thing to keep in mind is whether the switch needs to be latching or
non-latching. For example, Roland requires a non-latching switch. If you
use a latching switch, you have to tap the thing twice to engage the
change. Annoying.

One button on the foot switch for Hot Rod Deluxe switches clean/drive,
the other moredrive on/off. The reverb is not foot switchable.

Do they do this with 1/4" TRS?

It's a 1/4" jack, but it seems to be different from e.g. that for Blues
Deville.

New HRDs come with the footswitch included.

Regular spst stompswitch will work.
I've been all over the net trying to find details of the origional
fender dual footswitch and many state that the opto isolating
switching is dependant on the footswitche's led voltage drop.
I wanted to have a "reverb-only" footswitch so I wired a stereo jack
with the ring and ground (tip not connected) with a 2 wire conductor
to a simple on-off spst stompswitch (not the momentary type).
It worked like a charm for either reverb (pedal plain jack) or
clean/drive (pedal red jack).

For durability I ordered a carling dpdt stomp switch (dpdt because I
might hook up a battery and led indicator)

Savy,
not all fender footswitches are created equally,

the Hotrod switch-matrix is completely different to standard on/off.
He can´t use a spst...

My guess is that any footswitch will do something. Whether it will
change channels or switch to "More Drive", I don't know.

The short answer is no...The fender switch uses logic states +/-
voltages (1 to 15) multiplexed with diodes over a single conductor 1/4"
cable (preferably speaker) to achieve the switching and illuminating the
LED's to different colors. All the Hot Rod amps do this.

Sorry, I'm in need of one too, Fender seems to be out of stock, so it's
EBay or no way.

There isn't much to them. I made one with about $10 in parts - a
metal Bud box, two switches, two LED's, two diodes and a jack. You
can find the footswitch schematic in the amp schematic from Fender's
website.
