Working on an Ampeg B-25 I am finding some very strange headed screws.
Where can I buy a screw driver for these?

BTW, the head looks like a dog bone. Anybody know the official name of this
slot?

Type "clutch head screwdriver" into Google and you'll find
a plethora of places that sell these. IIRC Ampegs use a
#2 clutch head tip but don't quote me on that.

More info:

In a pinch I've been able to get them out with a
Philips of appropriate size.

Clutch-head. Master Mechanic still makes clutch-head drivers.

Any True Value hardware store should have one, or be able to
order one for you. Alternatively, buy a set of 1/4" hex bits that has
a couple of clutch-head sizes on board.

I checked my local Tool Town store. They are a specialty tool store and
have just about everything a real macho man could want. They did have two
sizes (5/32" and 3/16") clutch screwdrivers, so I bought them. I rarely
need an excuse to buy a new cool tool.

I still wonder why Ampeg used those damn things? Probably got a deal on
them.

Never heard the term "No user serviceable parts
inside?" ;-)

They were developed (and like a few other fastener heads) for increased
productivity & uniform torquing with assembly line tools. They are
also common in recreational vehicles/trailers of the same period, and
other things.

I use a very small flat head screwdriver on my Ampeg; bigger than an eye
glasses screwdriver, but smaller than a normal screwdriver.

Clutch heads may have been a "pre-curser" to the Torx, robot-friendly
screw head. Which leads back to the 70-year old question........What's
wrong with the Robertson head?

I must admit i found a plus in the Torx screwdriver set a couple of mos
ago. Couldn't find a hex wrench for the shower handle, went thru 25 hex
wrenches, Metric and standard, nope, snatched up a torx screw driver,
hey it fit perfect! The sharp edges grab the hex hole better than the
proper wrench.

Butt... what was wrong with the Robertson? 3 sizes fit all.
