From one authoritative site:

"The model 230 Hickok was an attempt to provide a low cost tester to the
hobbyist in the waning days of tube equipment. One of the last tube
testers offered by Hickok in 1975 (the other two were the 6000A and the
539C making the latter the tube tester longest in continuous
production). However the 230 is a far cry from a 539. Though it is a
solid state dynamic emissions tester the keyword is "emissions" since
reading is Bad-?-Good. Switches are very limited with five knobs and ten
two-position slide switches."

I'd pass. I own a Hickok 6000A.

That is a low end tester. My dad had one of those 230s, and was
always using my 800. I'd look for the latest version of the 600, 6000,
or 800 series. TV-7s are the cream of the crop, mil spec, but are
expensive. The newest of all these are around 30 years old.

Yup. I know folks who LIVE by re-built Drug Store
Tube testers. They love the MoJo. And yes, it's KOOL..

But it's not a valid tester. Get the best ya can find.

FIND the rare beast n buy it right once. I tell ya..

"..all the smart boyz, they know why.."

THE man who was awesome in the whole NYAL/MOS-CODE
OTL biz..when it died...builds a tube tester that
is quite good, cheap, and better aimed at 'matching'
tubes. Never held one, but knew him in up/S NY in
THOSE OFD. George Kaye. Not only an Icon, BUT one
damn great u/right bass player. Put me up for a week
in his home, shared good times, sold me boxes of shit
to drag home. No idea what he's doing now. An ICON.

Sometimes, I have pity on you kids, cause it was so
easy to reach those Icons in the OFD. Now, no F'in way.

Unless you do allot of equipment work other
than a couple home brews and such... Send ME the
$200 and I'll tell telepathically if the tube in question
is poor. ;-)

Really ... tube testers just check for shorts between
grids and opens on the filaments. Audio tubes don't need
to be really *tested* IMO since you can hear the symptoms.
Radio/RF special tubes are likely a better candidate for testers
but when was the last time you checked your Superheterdyne IF receiver
tube or a AFC circuit ?
